There is a good reason this jig is called the "Multi-Jig." It consists of a housing with two interchangeable seats for different types of tools; the open seat and the closed seat, which practically gives you two jigs in one.
With the SVS-50, you can sharpen lathe chisels with a straight or convex edge, as well as parting tools, scrapers, and carving tools.
For lathe chisels
The closed seat is designed for precision sharpening of lathe chisels with an oval cross-section with a straight or convex edge. Since the tool is mounted in the center of the jig vertically, you only need to mount the tool once to sharpen both sides. Once you are finished with one side, you simply flip the jig upside down to sharpen the tool to a symmetrical shape.
Thanks to a unique and patented design, you can also sharpen chisels with oval cross-sections. The jig straightens the chisel so that it lies parallel to the universal support, allowing you to sharpen both straight and convex edges. The maximum width for lathe chisels is 32 mm.
For scrapers, parting tools, and wide carving tools
The open seat, where the tool is mounted with a top screw, is used for tools with the edge across the length direction, such as parting tools, scrapers, and wide carving tools. Both seats are mounted with a bottom screw, which also locks it in the selected angle.
SVS-50 together with Tormek's setting device for lathe tools
When sharpening lathe tools, we strongly recommend using the SVS-50 together with the TTS-100 setting device for lathe tools. By doing so, you can easily repeat the shape and angle over and over again. You will also save time, as you will only remove minimal steel during each sharpening.
Wet sharpening on a Tormek gives you a very sharp edge that also lasts longer. A really sharp chisel slices through easily and gives the wood a very fine surface, often you won't need to sand afterward with sandpaper.
SVS-50 on a bench grinder
Do you have a new lathe tool and need to remove a lot of steel to change the profile? With the mounting kit BGM-100, you can also use the SVS-50 on a bench grinder. However, you must be careful not to burn the edge. After the initial rough sharpening on the bench grinder, you then move over to the Tormek machine to give the edge its final sharpness.
The SVS-50 is also included in the Lathe Package TNT-808.
